Tuesday, October 23 – German Language Lessons Return! 

German language classes will start tonight with Janet Price, retired language teacher from Roncalli High School conducting the classes. The cost of the class is $5.00 per person per class, payable at the start of each class.  Classes are structured for the rank beginner or for those who want to brush up on their language skills.  Come early and enjoy dinner with some of your classmates! 

Wednesday, October 24 – Buffet Night!

This week’s buffet will feature Sauerbraten, Alt Bier Chicken, Pork Schnitzel and Sausages with Kraut.  For sides, German Potato Salad, Buttered Noodles, Green Beans, Sweet Potatoes and plenty of cold salads!   The full menu will also be available.  

Wednesday, October 24 – Germans in Indiana:  Indiana’s German Heritage Revisited – A presentation by Dr. Wolfgang Grams, Oldenburg, Germany​

Location:  Athenaeum, Damenverein Room, 6:30 – 9:00 pm

Dr. Wolfgang Grams is the founder and owner of the institute “Routes to the Roots” in the city of Oldenburg, Germany.   He is one of the most knowledgeable experts on the German migration experience, still teaches classes in history and cultural tourism, and has carried out many projects in the field of German-American migration studies.   

German Heritage Society Essay Contest & Scholarships!

The Indiana German Heritage Society supports students at Indiana high schools through scholarships and awards on an annual basis.  The German-American Day Essay Contest for high school students submission deadline is October 31, 2018 with cash prizes.  The deadline for Scholarships for Study Abroad programs is February 15, 2019 with several scholarships for school-sponsored exchange programs such as GAPP or the IU Honors Program.  For more information on both programs, please contact the Indiana German Heritage Society or Claudia Grossmann at cgrossma@iupui.edu 

Looking ahead….

Friday, October 26 – Friday Night Music with the Wilsons! 

Ken & Debbie Wilson will be in the house on Friday to kick off Zombie Oktoberfest weekend at the Edelweiss!   We’ll have Friday Night Fried Chicken as the Friday dinner special!  Plus we have plenty of bier on tap and in bottles!   

 Saturday, October 27 – Zombie Oktoberfest! 

Join us for Zombie Oktoberfest stating at 5:00 pm in the Edelweiss Restaurant and Biergarten, 8602 S. Meridian Street.   Special German Buffet included in $15.00 entry price with children under 12 – $7.50.  Zombie Oktoberfest Costume Contest and treats for the kids!  Polkamotion playing all Night!  Face painting to give you the perfect ghoulish look!   German biers on tap and in bottles, pretzels and strudels available for purchase!  Should Mother Nature give us foul weather, the festivities will move into the banquet room! 

Saturday, October 27 – German Park Closing

The annual park closing will take place on Saturday, October 27 at 9:00 am.  The Federation can use as many volunteers as possible in order to defray the costs of paying the maintenance workers to do some of the work. Please bring work gloves and rakes. If you have a couple of hours to spare that morning, come out and rake a pile or two of leaves or pick up sticks.  Coffee and donuts will be provided.  Should we wake up to substantial rains on Saturday, the closing will be Sunday, October 28 at 9:00 am.
